History
In 1953, Bill Wagner moved from Paris, TN to Tuscaloosa and purchased an existing shoe store in Downtown Tuscaloosa and shortly thereafter opened the first Wagner’s Shoes. Bill was not a stranger to the shoe business; his father had also been in the footwear business for most of his life. As a family shoe store, his mission was to sell quality products and give great customer service. In 1992, his son, Tommy Wagner transitioned the stores from traditional family shoe stores to The Athlete’s Foot, a full line athletic footwear store. Twice awarded the TAF President’s Award for Outstanding Franchise by The Athlete’s Foot, Tommy Wagner has continued the traditions of his father. Also named the 2005 Alabama Retailer of the Year, he continues to focus on customer service, selection and value. Today, with the third generation of Wagner’s, Matt Wagner, they have 5 locations in Alabama Tuscaloosa, Northport, Demopolis and Jasper. In 2007, they opened the first TAF Performance Store in the world at Midtown Village in Tuscaloosa. This store design incorporates the Wagner’s philosophy with the technical aspects of providing quality shoes and fit for all levels of athletes.
